Setting off from our logistics base, near the Alcantara Gorges area, after a briefing about driving the buggies, we’ll travel along scenic roads towards Francavilla di Sicilia and then Castiglione. We’ll climb on a track surrounded by Ginestre (gorse)plants and ancient lava flows, which leads to the ‘quota mille’ road. We’ll then take the ‘Mareneve’ road, and later an off-road track which goes through the lovely ‘Ragabo Woods’. Along this route there is a lava cave called ‘Grotta del Corruccio.’There will be a visit to the cave kitted out with torches and helmets. We’ll set off in the Sideby Side again and we’ll take the ‘Mareneve’ road up to the Rifugio Citelli for a coffee break. Not far from the rifugio(mountain hut/bar/restaurant and hostel), we’ll walk along a beautiful track to climb to the top of the Sartorius craters.
We’ll take the road down to Linguaglossa and we’ll pass through part of the woods where there is the Zappinazzo larch pine tree, the oldest of its kind on Etna.
We’ll head back through Castiglione, Francavilla and then to our logistics base.
