Setting off from our logistics base, in the Alcantara Gorges area, after a briefing about driving the buggies, we’ll travel along scenic roads towards Francavilla di Sicilia and then Castiglione.
Along route, we’ll visit the Cuba Bizantina (Byzantine age church), stop to take photos and for a brief description of the place’s history , then we’ll head for Castiglione. We’ll pass through the old town and have a coffee break at a local bar.
From Castiglione we’ll head along an off-road track which leads to the Gravà area, where we’ll walk along a nature trail called the ‘Gurne dell’ Alcantara,’ with its series of spectacular waterfalls and green pools.
Back in the SidebySide, we’ll head for the Alcantara Gorges, where we’ll visit a scenic spot looking down on the deep basalt lava rock Gorges and then we’ll go down to the river to see up close the narrow Gorges and to admire the basalt rock formations called ‘canne d’organo’ (organ pipes) or ‘castata di legna’ (wood stacks)
Then we’ll return to our base.
